Idaho Sports and Recreation

Idaho is 83,574 square miles of outdoor recreation heaven, yet we have a population of less than 1.4 million. We have a mighty big back yard and a wide variety of adventures to suit any taste.

Known for our whitewater rivers, Idaho has licensed and bonded professional outfitters to take you on the ride of your life on the famous Middle Fork of the Salmon River or a more serene float on the Upper Main Salmon. Enjoy a mellow afternoon ride through downtown on the Boise River or head north to the Payette River for a more exciting run. You can jet boat over the rapids through Hells Canyon from either Hells Canyon Dam on the southern end or Lewiston to the north.

Our rivers offer a wealth of fishing opportunities as well, with more than 10 world-class blue-ribbon trout streams including the Henrys Fork and Silver Creek. Lakes and reservoirs across the state provide a wide variety of both warm and cold-water species for anglers. The Idaho Department of Fish and Game can provide more details on fishing regulations and hot spots to cast your line.

If land adventures are more your style, consider one of our outstanding bike paths. The stunning Route of the Hiawatha near Wallace will take you on an easy downhill ride through tunnels and over trestle bridges high in the mountains on a former railroad bed. The nearby Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes is a new 72-mile bike path along the Coeur d’Alene River. More adventurous visitors can try the new mountain biking trails at Tamarack Resort near Donnelly or on the Wood River Trails near world-famous Sun Valley.

Outfitters can guide you on a special adventure on land as well, such as llama trekking, horse pack trips and hunting trips. Visit the Idaho Outfitters and Guides Association site for information on all of the outfitted trips in Idaho.

Golf is always a treat in Idaho, especially if you follow our new Idaho Golf Trail, which partners nine of our best courses with lodging opportunities for an outstanding golf extravaganza.
